St. Michael Church Sets Groundbreaking Date October 17, 2004
Over $6.1 million raised in capital campaign to build new church
Wheaton, IL Following the Noon mass on Sunday, October 17, 2004, St. Michael parishioners will process from the school gym to the site of the new church to gather for a groundbreaking ceremony. The service will include a blessing of the ground, architects, contractors and building committee along with the turning of the first shovels of dirt. "It has been two-years and seven-months since our church was destroyed by fire. With input from our parishioners, the guidance of our building committee and the generosity of our donors, we are excited to get construction underway," said Fr. Don McLaughlin, pastor.
On August 24 the Wheaton Development and Zoning Board voted unanimously to approve and recommend to the City Council approval of the application for re-zoning and the submittal of the Planned Unit Development application. On September 14, the County reviewed and approved the storm water retention plan and request for variance. On September 21, the Wheaton City Council voted to approve the project, which includes the new church, new administrative offices, and new classrooms for the schools pre-school and kindergarten programs.
The construction period is expected to span 14 16 months with a formal dedication of the new church anticipated in early 2006.
